Earliest meeting: Wednesday 26th March 1862 Final meeting: Wednesday 26th March 1862 The tiny Devon village of Brampford Speke, together with its neighbouring Stoke Cannon, held its own races in the middle of the 19th century. The name itself derives from the Anglo-Norman terms for bramble and ford, while the Speke’s were Lords of the Manor. The twin villages lie on each side of the River Exe, some 4 miles north of Exeter. The main landowner lived in the splendid Brampford House which is in the centre of the village. The only recorded meeting took place on Wednesday 26th March 1862, although one had taken place in its near neighbour Stoke Cannon on Tuesday 31st July 1860.
